History

České dráhy is a company following a tradition of railway transport in the territories of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, which is more than one hundred and sixty years old. The historical milestones in the development of transport include many firsts:

  • 1828 - The first horse-drawn railway in Europe, ‚České Budějovice – Linec‘, was developed by František Gerstner and his successor, primarily to import salt from Linz to Bohemia.

  • 1839 - The first steam-engine railway in the current territory of the Czech Republic, ‚Vídeň – Břeclav‘, was developed as the first part of a route connecting the Capital of what was then the monarchy, with industrial areas in Northern Moravia, Upper Silesia and Galicia.

  • 1903 - The first standard gauge electrified track in Central Europe, the local ‚Tábor – Bechyně‘ track, the work of František Křižík, the Czech electrical engineer.

  • 1918 - Československé státní dráhy (ČSD) established.
ČSD existed from 1918 up to 1992; this was only interrupted between 1939 and 1945, when so-called Českomoravské dráhy (ČMD) operated in the Czech territory, while Slovenské železnice (SŽ) operated in Slovakia.

  • 1991 - within the ČSD network, operation of the prestigious European EuroCity (EC) network was launched.

  • 1993 - České dráhy (ČD) was established upon the splitting of ČSFR.

  • 1993 - Modernization of spinal tracks, i.e. railway corridors, was launched.

  • 1994 - Transport of trucks by a railway called RoLa was launched in the ‘Lovosice – Dresden’ track.
This type of transport was terminated in 2004, one of the reasons being the entry of the Czech Republic into the E.U. Nevertheless, truck transportation was followed by the regular transportation of road semitrailers and swap bodies along the ‚Lovosice – Hamburg‘ route.

  • 2003 - České dráhy, a.s. established.

  • 2007 - ČD Cargo, a. s. established.
