Black/Brown Coal

The transport of coal is one of the flagship activities of ČD Cargo in the field of cargo transport. In 2008 it accounted for 22.4 million tons of the substrate and in all modes of transport - domestic transport, import and export.

Transport in the transit mode makes up a large part of the overall transport. The large volume of transported black and brown coal is due to the intensive mining of this mineral resource in the Czech Republic; with brown coal being mined in the North-Bohemian Basin, and black coal being mined in the Ostrava-Karviná Basin.

The majority of transported brown coal is routed to the ČEZ, a.s. power plants, while the rest is intended for minor customers and Slovakian heating plants.

Coal from the Ostrava-Karviná Basin ensures the operation of power and metallurgy giants, not only in our country, but also abroad (Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia).

Classification

The ‘Coal’ commodity involves brown coal and black coal, as well as black coal coke. Each type can be further classified as e.g. dust, sorted coal, energy coal, blast-furnace coke, etc. To make communication with the customer easier, we use three basic commodity classes:

Class 12 – Black coal (NHM : 2701),
Class 13 – Brown coal (NHM : 2702),
Class 14 – Coke (NHM : 2704).
