Transport of waste after a tornado from the Mikulčice landfill

On 6 September 2021, the first train loaded with waste should depart from Mikulčice in South Moravia. After the tornado and the subsequent elimination of its consequences, the waste was concentrated in the area of the Mír mine in Mikulčice. Purum, in cooperation with ČD Cargo and Thermoservis, has already started processing 35 000 tons of waste, which will be transported from there exclusively by rail.

An estimated 210 000 tons of waste is located in three collection points in Moravská Nová Ves, Mikulčice and Hodonín. The estimated amount is not final, the waste after liquidation and demolition work is still increasing. The existing approximately 35 000 tons of waste in the Mikulčice landfill consists of mixed bulky and mixed construction waste. Preparations are currently underway for transport, consisting of mechanical sorting of waste. In particular, iron, wood or dangerous asbestos are separated. Accredited analysis of waste, removal, sorting at the terminal facility and subsequent recovery or disposal of waste takes place on an ongoing basis. The separated mixed bulky and mixed construction waste will be loaded by special heavy equipment of the company Thermoservis into the Innofreight superstructures and transported by ČD Cargo to the facilities of the companies Purum and CELIO, with an emphasis on the maximum possible material and energy recovery of waste.

"One train set with 72 Innofreight superstructures will handle about 1 200 tons of waste, which corresponds to the journey of seventy fully loaded vehicles with waste," says Tomáš Tóth, Chairman of the Board of ČD Cargo, a.s. "With the current volume of waste, this means diverting more than 2 000 trucks from road and saving almost 1 000 tons of CO2," adds Tomáš Tóth. Purum employees have been helping in the municipalities affected by the tornado from the very beginning. We have our office in the affected Mikulčice. In the area of the Mír Mikulčice mine, we provide a landfill for sorting and utilization of construction debris and other waste. We are happy to help eliminate the consequences of the tornado to a successful end," says Daniel Kraft, CEO of Purum. "The waste we have contracted to process and remove will be taken away by the end of January next year. The processing of waste in South Moravian municipalities on the basis of the results of the tender is provided by the company AVE CZ waste management together with its subcontractors, including the Czech waste company Purum."
