The decline in transport volumes is caused above all by structural changes in the economy which are bringing permanent diversion from the fossil fuels in the energy and heating industries, lower production of steel in Europe (as an example we can mention termination of crude steel production in Liberty Ostrava) or also outages of energy-intensive chemical production. These factors have been followed by uncertain situation in the automotive industry, return of timber harvesting to the period before the bark-beetle calamity, and at the same time, the need to halt the single wagon load losses. “To retain our competitive advantage and stabilize ČD Cargo also for the future, we must pursue the next stages of the ongoing restructuring. This is, unfortunately, connected with downsizing of all our capacities. We reduce numbers of freight wagons, locomotives, and we cannot avoid further dismissing of our employees,” says Tomáš Tóth, the chairman of the ČD Cargo Board of Directors

ČD Cargo could not miss such an important event. Stand No. 1B01 was located in the covered Hall 1, which this time was shared by both the sales managers and the ČD Cargo HR team. Thanks to this combination, our stand was surrounded by visitors of all ages for almost the entire duration of the fair. Two exhibits were located on the outdoor tracks: locomotive 383.022 and a presentation wagon.

ČD Cargo was reacting continuously to the performance decline and started its transformation in time with the aim to adapt itself to the new reality and prepare for the future. “The change in the structure of transported commodities and the overall decline in performance on the rail freight market in the Czech Republic leads us to inevitable reduction in capacities for which we don’t have use. We systematically lower the numbers of freight wagons, locomotives, and also employees. A fundamental change is happening also in the product of Single Wagon Loads, which is economically no longer sustainable in its current form,” continues Tomáš Tóth.

The freight transport segment itself registered loss of CZK 945 million. “The economic results were negatively influenced above all by transactions related to the ongoing process of downsizing the company – reserves for severance payments to employees and one-time revaluation of the assets, i.e. redundant rolling stock,” explains Tomáš Tóth. In total, these accounting transactions exceeded the amount of one billion Czech crowns. In case of assets revaluation, it means no real expenditure, but a necessary accounting adjustment which supports transparent management and long-term sustainability of the company.

For the locomotives, a catalogue has been created (the first volume contains 24 locomotives so far). Currently we are offering for sale locomotives of series 122, 123, 181, 182, 210, 709, 731, 753, and 771. The ceremonial tapping of the symbolic cornerstone was attended on behalf of ČD Cargo by members of the Board of Directors Zbyszek Waclawik and Martin Svojanovský. The company Medlog was represented by its director Michaela Svrčková, while Zdeněk Vocásek, the statutory vice-mayor of the town of Nymburk, delivered a speech on the terminal’s importance.

Railways are becoming increasingly interconnected across Europe. Both organizations therefore believe that the joint internship will attract more enthusiastic talents who want to build a career with an international outreach. ČD Cargo offers a real-world “business” experience; trainees will be involved in day-to-day operations and work with colleagues to solve practical tasks. Within the FTE, they will then gain a broader understanding of the railway industry. They will be involved in strategic projects that aim to improve rail transport across Europe.
