On 14 January 2019, the so-called Noah's train was sent for the next journey from Vienna to Berlin. The Rail Freight Forward´s project was presented to the wider public at the World Climate Conference held last December in Katowice, Poland. We introduced the Rail Freight Forward initiative (RFF) earlier, now look at the Noah's train itself.
The Noah's train is inspired by the oldest history of environmental protection. Noah was, according to the Old Testament, chosen to save mankind and all animal species. That is why ten containers on this symbolic train are "painted" with animal motifs. RFF points out that transport is one of the largest sources of CO2 pollution and at the same time that rai freight transport to rail is the fastest and easiest way to reduce pollution.
In Vienna the train was welcomed among others by Federal President Alexandr Van der Bellen, Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology Norbert Hofer, or CEO of ÖBB Andreas Matthä.
The major ambitions of the association include increasing the share of rail freight to 30 % by 2030. In Berlin, the project and the train will be introduced on 24 January, followed by Paris and the train will end its journey on 20 February 2019 in Brussels.
