The transport volume of 27.8 million tonnes is significantly higher than the company had planned, and in recent months it has been roughly at last year’s level. Performance exceeded expectations in the transport of solid fuels, which is closely linked to the crisis in the Middle East and rising oil prices. Year-over-year, we transported significantly more timber and grain. Intermodal transport and the automotive segment also saw growth. In both cases, the company’s international expansion strategy, launched in previous years, is having a positive impact. For example, thanks to cooperation with the German subsidiary, the first train pulled by a ČD Cargo locomotive reached the Danish border crossing station of Padborg. The company does not focus solely on traditional commodities but is preparing a number of projects to transport new commodities, such as car batteries, biomass, or solid alternative fuels, among others.

“Higher transport volumes mean efficient utilization of ČD Cargo’s capacity, which has translated into positive financial results,” says Radim Ječný, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ČD Cargo. The company has managed to maintain operational efficiency despite challenging track closures affecting freight train operations not only on rail lines in the Czech Republic but also, for example, in Germany. “I would like to thank all our business partners for their trust and our employees for their high-quality work. The results we’ve achieved are positive, but that doesn’t mean our industry has entered a period of certainty. Market developments remain highly dynamic, and we must be prepared for the fact that next year will bring new challenges, ” states Radim Ječný, concluding: “Right now is the right time to focus on efficiency, service quality, and seeking out new opportunities. These are the areas that will determine how successful we will be in the coming years. “

Václav Andrýsek previously held various positions at ČD Cargo, including that of executive director. After leaving the company, he held management positions at transportation and freight forwarding companies and also focused on developing his own business activities.

ČD Cargo, a.s., issues a fourth amendment of its Tariff TVZ with effect from 1st August 2026. The Tariff is accessible at https://www.cdcargo.cz/en/shipping-terms/tariffs/.

However, the company’s financial results for 2025 were significantly negatively impacted by restructuring measures implemented in response to the gradual decline in traffic volumes faced by most European national rail carriers. “In response to the unfavorable situation in the rail freight transport market, ČD Cargo implemented the next phase of restructuring, which entailed a reduction in excess capacity of wagons, locomotives, employees, and other company expenses. The loss exceeding CZK 3.8 billion was thus primarily influenced by the creation of a restructuring reserve and the write-down of assets no longer needed in the future. The aim of these steps is to adapt the size of ČD Cargo to market conditions and thereby ensure its long-term financial stability,” adds Michal Krapinec.

In the first three months of this year, the situation improved slightly; our company managed to increase the volume of transported timber and iron, and the automotive sector also reported positive results.

In addition, effective from April 3, 2026, a zero rate will be applied to fee PD 27.35 for failure to meet special conditions for forwarding or delivery at stations whose entries in the List of railway stations include additional notation “zp” (table of special conditions for forwarding and delivery at https://www.cdcargo.cz/en/shipping-terms/carriage-conditions/).

However, many of our trains are still powered by diesel locomotives. ČD Cargo spends tens of millions of crowns on fuel purchases, and unfortunately, we are unable to cover these unexpected sharp and long-term increases from our own resources.

If the price of fuel stabilizes at a higher level in the long term, we will be forced to introduce a fuel surcharge. We want to announce this possible surcharge transparently, and it would only apply to trains on non-electrified lines. Although we also use diesel locomotives at marshalling yards and almost every transport of your consignment begins and ends with a shunting locomotive, we are unable to quantify these costs transparently and, like you, we also have to bear part of the commercial risk.

Any fuel surcharge will be clearly linked to the announced fuel price, and if the price falls, the surcharge will be set at zero. If, on the other hand, the price falls below predetermined limits, we are prepared to offer you a discount calculated in the same way.

Personally, I still hope that we will not have to introduce this surcharge, but even so, I would like to thank you all in advance for your human and commercial understanding.

In 2023, the project was granted approval with EIA conditions by the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, and an application for the determination of the mining area is currently being processed by the District Mining Authority in Ostrava. In connection with the upcoming realization, both companies, ČD Cargo and Vidnavský kaolin, are in intensive negotiations with Správa železnic on the restoration and commissioning of connecting railway lines and related transport infrastructure, including their corresponding capacity increase for efficient rail transport from site of mining and processing to their final destinations.
